About Us

We are a family of passionate small scale gardeners, picklers, fermenters, preservers, bakers and makers who believe that sustainable food practices, the ethos of sharing what we grow and reducing food wastage is an exciting and wildly worthy way to care for ourselves and our planet.  Smallholding was born from a love of growing and eating seasonally from our small suburban plot in Geelong. 

Anthony and Beth have decades of hospitality experience as former owners and operators of North Melbourne’s much loved neighbourhood cafe, Fandango, which they established in 2006 and where began their love of pickling, preserving and fermenting. Since moving on from the cafe and back to their home town of Geelong in 2015 with a young, growing family they have established a thriving and abundant edible garden and kitchen in which nothing is wasted. 

Anthony is a qualified Horticulturalist with extensive knowledge in edible gardens who will design, build, plant and support the installation and maintenance of vegetable gardens in residential backyards, small spaces, educational settings and businesses. 

Beth is a Chef and recipe developer who manages to wrangle anything grown into a family meal, sweet bake, pickle, living ferment or snack. She loves to feed her family and friends with honest, nutrient-dense cooking inspired by her garden and her food is available for small scale baking and special events, birthday and workplace catering. 

Our three children are keen tasters and honest critics.
